Music theory has an undeserved reputation as being dull, or unimportant for the casual musician. While it is certainly true that you can get to a high standard of playing without knowing any theory, knowing some rudiments will make the journey much easier. Additionally, students wanting to progress past Grade 5 practical on their instrument usually require Grade 5 theory.

A good grounding in music theory will teach you about rhythm, pitch and meter. You will learn about melody and harmony, about different instruments and how they play together in ensembles like orchestras or bands. You will learn about musical form, and how music is structured. All of this will give you a greater appreciation not just of the music you are playing, but the music you experience all around you.

Students studying GCSE and A-Level music also require knowledge of music theory. Luckily, like most examination subjects, the material can be learnt in a fun and accessible way.
